The Latest IssueField Archery

Field Archery is, basically, simulated Hunting. Unlike Target Archery in which Archers shoot from the same Shooting Line at targets that are gradually moved closer to them, Field Archers shoot mainly in wooded areas at targets representing an animal or bird and they move from target to target, scoring as they go. The target face may be a printed roundel (usually in only two colours), a printed (or drawn) picture of a creature (sometimes imaginary) or, a cut-out of a picture and pasted to board to the same shape or, more recently, life-size polystyrene models of birds or animals (3-D). There are several Societies involved in this discipline and, although some may use the same rounds, most have their own rules and rounds and methods of scoring.

FITA This Federation is not only responsible for Target Archery Worldwide but also for other forms, including Field. Its target faces (Field) are usually roundels which, like other Societies, are placed in wooded or open areas, across, up or downhill or on a level surface, in positions to test the archer's skill. A little more regimented than the other Societies, it's Championship competitors are selected Nationally and, where possible form selected National teams. Every two years a World Championship is held. The courses are both Marked (Field) or unmarked (Hunter)

GNAS The Grand National Archery Society. The British affiliated Society of FITA which also holds Field tournaments and, in the main follows the rounds set by FITA. However, there are National round, which, as with most other Societies, use pictures or models of animals.

IFAA International Field Archery Association President: Bill Rogers, The IFAA is possibly the world's largest governing body for International Field Archery and has several National Associations affiliated. Unlike FITA, it only deals with Field Archery. It also sets its targets to test the skill of the archer but, in all cases the distances to them are marked at the shooting line. In this Association wooden arrows are only recognised in the Longbow and American Flat Bow Classes. The types of Bow and Classes for this Association are: Longbow and American Flat Bow (American Longbow) (with Wooden Arrows) Barebow Recurve and Barebow Compound (Stabilisation permissible but no sights are allowed). Freestyle Ltd-Recurve (with any sight and release aid). Freestyle Ltd.-Compound (with any sight and release aid).
